Thief River Falls blanks Minnesota for 2nd straight night

HOYT LAKES, Minn. – Bailey Schmitz posted his second consecutive shutout of the Minnesota Iron Rangers Saturday night, a 3-0 victory, in Superior International Junior Hockey League play at Hoyt Lakes Arena.

Jared Pederson picked up the eventual game-winner for the Norskies 7:07 into the first period.

The visitors tacked on two more in the latter stages of the second stanza to go up by three as Alec Daman connected at even strength at 15:51 while Brett Piper added one via the power play at 18:43.

It would go scoreless from there with Schmitz securing his fifth shutout of the campaign while extending a personal goalless streak to 125 minutes and 11 seconds.

Connor Bowey added two assists for Thief River Falls in the triumph.

Schmitz in all made 22 saves on the night was Iron Rangers’ netminder Tyler Thompson was busy, seeing 45 attempts fired his way in defeat.

The result also puts the Norskies back into sole possession of first place in the SIJHL standings with 80 points.

That’s two more than the second-place Dryden GM Ice Dogs, who do have a game in hand on Thief River Falls.
