Fort Frances, ON – The Sioux Lookout Bombers were able to claim 3 out of a possible 4 points in their weekend series against the Fort Frances Lakers with a win on Saturday night.
The game had a fast start as it took just over a minute for the Lakers to get on the scoreboard. Dylan Wedword followed up Friday’s 2 goals performance with the opener assisted by Trever Sanderson. It was the only lead of the night for Fort Frances, and it was short lived as Sioux Lookout would answer back 17 seconds later. Calum McGill evened the game at 1 with the help of Lucas Trimarchi. The Bombers weren’t done in the 1st period as with just under 4 minutes remaining Blake Burke would give them a 2-1 lead. Burke’s goal was assisted by Trimarchi and Peter Zilkalns.
Burke would score his 2nd goal of the night just over a minute into the 2nd giving his club a 2-goal edge. The assists were the same as the previous goal, giving Trimarchi his playmaker and Zilkalns his 2nd. Fort France would attempt to rally at the halfway point getting a goal from Trever Sanderson to bring it back within 1. Wedword would get an assist securing his 2nd point of the night and Brady Wicklund picked up the 2nd helper. With just over a minute remaining Burke would score his 3rd for a hat trick and a 4-2 Bomber lead. It was a power play goal assisted by Alex Lucas and Connor Burke.
Both goaltenders shut down their nets in the 3rd period. Fort Frances had a furious comeback attempt outshooting the Bombers 20-8 in the frame, but Sioux Lookout goalie Jake Manners was perfect for 20 minutes and helped his team pick up the win.
Manners stopped 36 of 38 in a winning effort. Fort Frances netminder Brenden Stroble had 35 saves and picked up the loss. Blake Burke picked up 1st star with a hat trick, Branden Boress of Fort Frances secured 2nd star without ever being on the scoresheet, and Trever Sanderson was 3rd star.
