SIJHL announces preseason schedule

THUNDER BAY, Ont. –  The Superior International Junior Hockey League announced Thursday its preseason schedule for the upcoming campaign.

There are a total of five games on the exhibition slate beginning with a rematch of last season’s Bill Salonen Cup final as the Fort Frances Lakers host the Minnesota Iron Rangers Friday night at Ice for Kids Arena. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Saturday evening the English River Miners pay a visit to Fort Frances and will take on the Lakers at 6:30 p.m. at Ice for Kids Arena.

Next will feature the Iron Rangers and Lakers renewing acquaintances on Tuesday, Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. with Hoyt Lakes Arena serving as the venue.

On Thursday, Sept. 11 at 7:30 p.m. Fort Frances will take on the Dryden Ice Dogs in a second annual memorial game at Marathon Arena.

This exhibition contest is once again being held in memory and honour of Jaret Leclair, Jordan Nabigon, Kody Nabigon and Greg Nabigon, four Pic River First Nation residents, who tragically lost their lives in a motor vehicle accident in October of 2012.

Both Jaret Leclair and Jordan Nabigon were alumnus of the SIJHL with Leclair playing with Fort Frances during his junior career while Nabigon suited up for the Sioux Lookout Flyers.

Kody Nabigon meanwhile was an avid hockey player in Marathon and Greg Nabigon was a father of four with hockey serving as a huge part and love in all of these young men lives.

All proceeds from the event with go to the Pic River Memorial Fund.

SIJHL preseason play will then conclude on Sunday, Sept. 14 at 3 p.m. when English River entertains the Lakers at Ear Falls Arena.

League regular season action begins Friday, Sept. 19 on two fronts as Dryden visits English River and at 7 pm. while Fort Frances hosts the Thunder Bay North Stars at 7:30 p.m.
