Lakers victorious in preseason opener

FORT FRANCES, Ont. –  Alex Rezansoff tallied twice while Matt Vela cored once and added two assists to help the Fort Frances Lakers double up the Minnesota Iron Rangers 6-3 Friday night in Superior International Junior Hockey League exhibition action at Ice for Kids Arena.

There was plenty goals scored in the opening 20 minutes, including four by the hometown Lakers.

After Seth Chumley gave Minnesota the lead six and a half minutes into the contest the Lakers’ Carter Chorney answered right back two shifts later.

Max Seiter put the visiting Iron Rangers back on top at 13:35, but Fort Frances countered with three quick strikes to go up a pair after one period of play.

After Rezansoff tied via the power play just over a minute later Aaron Wesley-Chisel and Vela added additional efforts to put the Lakers in front for good.

Send period tallies by Josh Gouin, during a man advantage, and an even strength marker by Rezansoff extended the Fort Frances cushion to 6-2.

Jacob Shannon added another for Minnesota late in the middle session, in what turned out to be the final goal of the night.

Each club played both their netminders in the contest with Devin Tappenden stopping 11 of 13 and picking up the win while Ryan Ferguson turned aside 22 of 23 in relief.

Colton Anderson started for the Iron Rangers and suffered the loss with Kyle Carignan giving up one against as the Minnesota duo combined to face 29 Lakers’ attempts.

SIJHL preseason play resumes Saturday at 6:30 p.m. as the Lakers host the English River Miners back at Ice for Kids Arena.
