SIJHL announces CCM 1st & 2nd all-star teams

THUNDER BAY, Ont. – The Superior International Junior Hockey League announced Tuesday its’ second annual CCM first and second all-star teams for the 2014-15 season.

Each of the awards, which are presented by CCM Hockey, recognizes the individual accomplishments of six forwards, four defencemen and two goaltenders during regular season play in the SIJHL.

The CCM first and second all-stars were selected, in part, by voting done by each of the SIJHL’s member clubs.

Along with the players, a pair of head coaches, two general managers and a duo of individuals who serve in trainer and/or equipment manager capacities with the their respective clubs have been honoured for their efforts for the 2014-15 campaign.

“The SIJHL would like to recognize the recipients of the CCM all-star awards for their efforts during the course of the 2014-15 season,” said SIJHL Commissioner Bryan Graham.

“The league would also like to take time and acknowledge CCM Hockey for their commitment and partnership of the second annual CCM first and second all-star teams,” added Graham.

The following are the CCM first and second all-star team recipients for the 2014-15 SIJHL season.

CCM 1ST ALL-STAR TEAM

FORWARD: COLE GOLKA, DRYDEN GM ICE DOGS – Golka led all SIJHL skaters in both goals and points with 47 and 89 respectively. … Was tied for the league-lead in game-winning tallies with seven. … His 14 power play markers were the second most in the SIJHL. … Set a new Dryden franchise record for goals and points in a season.

FORWARD: LUCAS DEBENEDET, FORT FRANCES LAKERS – Earned CCM first team all-star laurels for a second straight season. … Led Fort Frances in point-per-game average at 1.45. … Finished second in team scoring with 58 points in just 40 games. … Lakers went 28-1 in games he registered at least one point.

FORWARD: EVAN ERICKSON, MINNESOTA IRON RANGERS – Led Minnesota in offensive production with 71 points in 45 contests. … Was second in the SIJHL in point-per-game average at 1.58. … His 50 assists were the most of any player in the league.

DEFENCE: NOAH ANDERSON, MINNESOTA IRON RANGERS – Led all SIJHL defencemen in goals, assists and points with 17, 37 and 54 respectively. …Also had six power play markers in 2014-15.

DEFENCE: TIM CAVAR, THUNDER BAY NORTH STARS – Earns first team CCM all-star honours after finishing on the second team last season. … Led all North Stars blueliners in goals, assists and points, scoring 11 times and setting up 29 others for 40 in 51 games. …His eight power play tallies led all SIJHL defencemen.

GOALTENDER: – NATHAN PARK, FORT FRANCES LAKERS – Park paced all SIJHL netminders in goals-against average at 1.92. … Also led the way in save percentage at .931 while his three shutouts were tops among league goaltenders.

COACH: WAYNE STRACHAN, FORT FRANCES LAKERS – Earns his second straight CCM first team nod as coach. … Guided Fort Frances to a SIJHL-best 43-11-1-1 record behind the bench helping the Lakers finish first overall in the league standings for a second consecutive year. Has been named SIJHL coach of the year four times, which ties him for the most in league history.

GENERAL MANAGER: WAYNE STRACHAN, FORT FRANCES LAKERS – Once again built the roster that finished first overall in league play for a second year in a row. … Also named to the first all-star team at head coach.

TRAINER/EQUIPMENT MANAGER: DON DOWSWELL, THUNDER BAY NORTH STARS – Earns his first CCM all-star accolades for his efforts in both equipment manager and training capacities with the North Stars both home and away.  

CCM 2ND ALL-STAR TEAM

FORWARD: JONATHON PHILLEY, DRYDEN GM ICE DOGS – Finished the regular season second in scoring for both the GM Ice Dogs and in the league. … Recorded 73 points overall. … His 31 goals tied him for second in the SIJHL. … Also had nine power play, two shorthanded and three game-winning markers to his credit.

FORWARD: JASON REYNOLDS, MINNESOTA IRON RANGERS – Set a new single-season high in assists and points with the Iron Rangers setting up 35 and recording 64 points. Second on Minnesota in scoring and tied for sixth in the league.

FORWARD: MATTHIAS GARDIMAN, THUNDER BAY NORTH STARS – Veteran North Stars forward earns a spot on the CCM second all-star team in back-to-back seasons. … Led Thunder Bay in offensive production with 70 points. … Finished fourth in league scoring. … Was second in the SIJHL in assists with 48.

DEFENCE: TROY WILLIAMS, DRYDEN ICE DOGS – Rookie D-man had a solid first season in the SIJHL. … Led all Dryden defencemen in goals with 11 and second in points with 34. … His offensive totals topped all first-year blueliners.

DEFENCE: NICK MINERVA, FORT FRANCES LAKERS – A solid contributor on both ends, Minerva aided his club’s efforts in finishing first overall and allow the fewest goals against in league play. …Paced all Lakers’ defencemen in goals with 10, including five on the power play. … Also added 16 assists.

GOALTENDER: TATE SPROXTON, DRYDEN GM ICE DOGS – Sproxton led all SIJHL goaltenders in wins with 23. … Was the league-leader in minutes played at just over 2,319. … His 1,212 saves were the second-most  overall.

COACH: JEREMY ADDUONO, THUNDER BAY NORTH STARS – Despite seeing his club hampered with multiple injuries and player shortages throughout the season, guided his club to 27 wins overall, two games over .500. … Was also named a CCM second team all-star last season.

GENERAL MANAGER: CHRIS WALBY, MINNESOTA IRON RANGERS – Recognized for his efforts in building the roster that had their highest regular season finish in their three years in the league. … Has also played a big role in the club’s success off the ice in Hoyt Lakes with their community involvement and participation. … Also coaches the Iron Rangers.

TRAINER/EQUIPMENT MANAGER: JIM WRIGHT, DRYDEN GM ICE DOGS – Long-time member of the Ice Dogs organization. … Earns his first CCM second team all-star honour for his efforts with Dryden.

Earning honourable mention laurels for the CCM all-star award were forwards Mason Meyer and Wyatt Cota along with defenceman Sam Schultz of Fort Frances; Dryden rearguard Kyle Pouncy, Minnesota forward Matt O’Dea and English River netminder Greg Harney.

Picking up staff honourable mentions were Dryden GM Brian Bates and head coach Kurt Walsten along with English River trainer Martha Paris.
