SIJHL alumni to vie for NCAA D-III crown

THUNDER BAY, Ont. – Alumni of the Superior International Junior Hockey League will be well represented among the two schools that will vie for a NCAA D-III championship Saturday evening in Lake Placid, N.Y.

That contest will feature the St. Norbert College Green Knights taking on the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Pointers in the title game.

Among those on the St. Norbert roster are SIJHL alums Jake Larson as well as Nick Le Sage and Luke Karakas.

Meanwhile Joey Haydock is a member of the UWSP squad.

Larson captured SIJHL – CCM Hockey rookie of the year laurels back in 2012-13 while a member of the Minnesota Wilderness that won both the Bill Salonen Cup league title as well as the Dudley-Hewitt Cup Central Canada Jr. A championship that season.

As for Le Sage, Karakas and Haydock, they are all original members of the first Minnesota Iron Rangers squad that competed in the SIJHL.

Stevens Points advanced to the championship game after defeating SUNY-Geneseo 5-1 Friday in semifinal action while St. Norbert won an 8-7 double overtime thriller over UMass-Boston in the other semi.

As for the Iron Rangers, they too are in action tonight as they host the English River Miners in Game 3 of their best-of-five series in SIJHL quarter-final play-in action at 7 p.m. at Hoyt Lakes Arena.

Minnesota leads 2-0 and has a change to close out the series with the Miners facing a must-win to keep their season alive.
