North Stars rally to upend Miners

THUNDER BAY, Ont. – The Thunder Bay North Stars rallied from a one-goal deficit in the third period by scoring four unanswered markers, including three on the power play, to upend the visiting English River Miners 6-3 Wednesday evening in a Superior International Junior Hockey League contest held at the Fort William Gardens.

It was a good start for the visiting Miners as they took a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes getting tallies from Richard Dartnall along with Matthew Ray’s first SIJHL goal sandwiched around one from Thunder Bay’s Brandon Wolframe.

After the North Stars’ Matthias Gardiman tied it at 6:57 of the second, Eric Champagne connected during a man advantage for English River five minutes later to make it a 3-2 game through two periods of play.

After getting out shot 38-21 after the second Thunder Bay rebounded in the final frame Thunder Bay eripting for those four goals in just over an 11-minute span to pull out the victory.

Gardiman levelled the proceedings at 7:46 before North Stars’ rookie forward Bradley Belisle struck twice on the power play to put his side up for good.

A Tim Cavar point blast in the late going, with his side up a man, rounded out the scoring as they completed the come from behind triumph.

Nathaniel Dupuis picked up the win for Thunder Bay while Greg Harney suffered the loss in a contest that saw the shots on goal favour English River 51-42.

SIJHL action resumes Friday on two fronts as the Miners host the Minnesota Iron Rangers in a 7 p.m. start at Ear Falls Arena while the North Stars head to Dryden to take on the GM Ice Dogs at 7:30 p.m. at Memorial Arena.
