North Stars knock off Lakers

HOYT LAKES, Minn. – An Avery Siau goal 11:45 into the third period proved to be the game-winner as the Thunder Bay North Stars upended the Fort Frances Lakers 4-3 in Day 3 play of the Superior International Junior Hockey League Showcase Thursday afternoon at Hoyt Lakes Arena.

The victory by Thunder Bay put an end to the Lakers’ season-best 13-game winning streak.

Fort Frances opened the scoring 12 and a half minutes into the contest as Wyatt Cota connected on the power play as he beat Thunder Bay starter Nathaniel Dupuis for his 19th goal of the season.

The North Stars pulled even in the final minute of the middle stanza as Brandon Wolframe worked his way out from behind the net and fed a pass across to Cashen Tighe who knocked in the equalizer from the top of the crease past Lakers’ netminder Nathan Park.

Thunder Bay went up a pair after 40 minutes of play picking up a pair of man advantage efforts off the stick of Nicholas Nigro and Matthia Gardiman a minute and half part to go up 3-1.

For Nigro, his goal was his 25th of the season while Gardiman tallied for the 18th time on the campaign.

Miles Nolan brought the Lakers back to within one at 11:11 only to see Siau answer back 34 seconds later with the eventual difference maker.

A.J. Kapcheck supplied a power play marker for Fort Frances with 2:28 to go, but Dupuis held the fort the rest of the way as Thunder Bay pulled out the victory.

Kris Kellaway dished out a pair assists to aid the Stars offensively.

Shots on goal in the contest favoured the Lakers 35-25 with Dupuis earning the decision and Nathan Park suffering his first defeat in a Fort Frances uniform.
