Norskies surprise GM Ice Dogs in OT

THIEF RIVER FALLS, Minn. – A Keaton Huot power play goal 2:05 into overtime was the difference as the Thief River Falls Norskies edged the first place Dryden GM Ice Dogs 5-4 Saturday evening in Superior International Junior Hockey League action at Ralph Engelstad Arena.

Special teams also allowed the Norskies to notch the lone tally of the opening frame as Parker Simonson picked up his fourth at 11:24.

Dryden came back in the middle session to tie it thanks to Kris Hamlin 41seconds in, but Thief River Falls regained the lead three minutes later on an effort from defenceman Dalton Johnson.

The back and forth affair then saw the visitors strike twice in quick order compliments of Nic Noseworthy and Derek McPhail.

Heading into the third, Simonson and McPhail would trade tallies before the Norskies’ Mitchell Soderberg forced OT with his team up a man with 3:02 to go.

Then in extra time Thief River Falls won it on Huot’s 13th of the campaign to end it.

Shots on goal in the game saw the Norskies outshoot the GM Ice Dogs 38-36 with Ryan Buttazzoni picking up the win and Patrick Zubick the OT setback.

The same two teams meet again Sunday at 5 p.m. CT back at The Ralph.
