Norskies knock off Minnesota rival Iron Rangers 5-3

THIEF RIVER FALLS, Minn. – A Michael Johnson power play goal eight and a half minutes into the third period proved to be the game-winner, as the Thief River Falls Norskies defeated the in-State rival Minnesota Iron Rangers 5-3 Wednesday evening, in Superior International Junior Hockey League action Wednesday evening at Ralph Engelstad Arena.

Connor Schuster staked the Norskies to the lead 5:35 into the contest only to see the Iron Rangers respond with markers from Logan Froberg and Jack Stensgard to take a 2-1 lead after one.

Thief River Falls countered by notching the only two tallies in the middle session as Connor Bowey and Mitchell Soderberg both found the back on the net.

Johnson then supplied the eventual difference maker in the third while his club was on a man advantage to put the Norskies up 4-2.

Minnesota’s Froberg added his second of the night at 19:40 to pull the visitors to within a goal, but Thief River Falls came back with an empty netter right off the draw seconds later to round out the night’s scoring.

Along with his marker, Soderberg also dished out two assists for the winners.

Shots on net favoured the Norskies by a 37-31 count with Ryan Buttazzoni picking up the win while Sean Angle suffered the loss for the Iron Rangers.
