Miners take 3rd straight from Norskies

COCHENOUR, Ont. – Dante Raposo tallied twice, including the game-winner, and added an assist as the English River Miners held on to defeat the Thief River Falls Norskies 5-4 Saturday evening in Superior International Junior Hockey League action at Cochenour Arena.

English River opened the scoring midway through the first frame with defenceman Trevor Pereverzoff collecting his 18th of the season.

Connor Schuster’s seventh of the campaign tied it for Thief River Falls early in the middle session before Raposo and Kaden Hintz connected to put the Miners up 3-1 after 40 minutes.

Connor Bowey brought the Norskies closer 4:35 into the third only to see Pereverzoff blast home his second of the night during a man advantage opportunity at 8:48.

The visitors came right back to make it 4-3 just 45 seconds later on a Blair Lindholm effort.

Continuing to go back and forth, English River got the eventual difference maker from Raposo with 3:58 remaining in regulation.

However Thief River Falls answered rapidly once again with Lindholm adding his second of the stanza and 10th overall at 16:51.

The Miners tightened up from there to preserve the victory, including being shorthanded in the final minute, as they held on to earn their six win in succession in league play.

Michael Lenko made 29 saves to post his third consecutive triumph over the Norskies in as many nights.

Kross Braaten faced 36 shots in defeat for Thief River Falls, who fell three points behind English River in the SIJHL standings, but also holding two games in hand on the Miners.
