Miners name new head coach/general manager

EAR FALLS — The English River Miners of the Superior Internation Junior Hockey League have announced the hiring of Derek Sweet-Coulter as their new general manager and head coach for the 2015-16 SIJHL season.

Sweet-Coulter, who hails from Victoria, B.C., played the majority of his minor hockey there.  

From there he went on to attend Notre Dame College in Wilcox, Sask., for two years.  

He then played five seasons in junior hockey, spending time in the BCHL, AJHL and the SJHL before finishing his career in the HJHL in Central Alberta.  

Having been involved in hockey for the last 25 years as both a player and coach, this will mark his ninth campaign as a head coach at the junior level.  

Sweet-Coulter coached in the Capital Junior Hockey League in Alberta for five seasons with the Strathcona Bruins and Edmonton Mustangs.

He spent three years at the helm of the Bruins taking them from a three-win season in 2008 to 20 wins in 2011.

As head coach with the Mustangs for two years, Derek’s teams finished with a 39-32-5 regular season record and went 4-3 in the playoffs.  

Sweet-Coulter spent 2014-15 with the Vegreville Rangers of the North East Alberta Junior Hockey League.

Heis extremely excited to be joining the Miners family and looks forward to building relationships within the communities of Ear Falls and Red Lake.

The basis of Derek’s program is Humility, Integrity and Courage.
