Miners edge North Stars

EAR FALLS, Ont. –  Lucas Toth’s first Superior International Junior Hockey League goal in the final minute of the second period proved to be the game-winner as the English River Miners edged the Thunder Bay North Stars 4-3 Saturday at Ear Falls Arena.

English River picked up the lone tally of the opening 20 minutes as it came off the stick of Jarrett Day at 3:05.

Ryker Moreau extended the lead for the home side 37 seconds into the middle stanza as he notched his 11th of the campaign.

Thunder Bay got themselves on the board at 7:45 of the second as Nicholas Nigro beat Miners’ starter P.D. Melgoza.

Moreau’s second of the stanza restored the home side’s cushion just over five minutes later only to see Kenny Turner bring the North Stars back to within one just after that.

That set the stage for Toth to fire home the deciding goal with 40 seconds left in the session as he finished off a three-point period to go along with two earlier assists.

Thunder Bay got a Tim Cavar power play goal 3:28 into the final frame to draw closer, but Melgoza shut the door the rest of the way to seal the decision.

Landon Matechuk also had a big night for the Miners doling out three assists for English River.

Shots on goal in the contest were 38 apiece with Melgoza earning the victory and Eric Mann suffering the loss.

SIJHL action resumes Wednesday as the red-hot Fort Frances Lakers put their current 10-game winning streak on the line as they pay a visit to Hoyt Lakes Arena for a 7 p.m. start vs. the Minnesota Iron Rangers.
