Maticic & Melgoza lead Miners past North Stars

THUNDER BAY, Ont. – English River Miners rookie Alex Maticic scored the game-winning goal, via the power play, with just under three and a half minutes to go while P.D. Melgoza made 50 saves en route to a 2-1 triumph over the Thunder Bay North Stars in a Superior International Junior Hockey League match-up at the Fort William Gardens.

The Miners picked up the lone tally of the first 4:52 into the contest as Layne Anderson beat Thunder Bay starter Eric Mann to put the visitors up by one.

The North Stars pulled even in the latter stages of the middle stanza as Matthias Gardiman scored for the 16th time this season to knot the affair at 1-1 after 40 minutes.

English River would prevail in the late going however as Thunder Bay native Maticic connected during a man advantage opportunity to give the visitors the win.

Melgoza kept the North Stars at bay most of the night finishing with the 50 stops to earn the decision.

Mann faced 32 shots in defeat for the home side.
