Lakers withstand Ice Dogs comeback to win in shootout

FORT FRANCES, Ont. – The Fort Frances Lakers withstood an impressive late third period comeback to edge the Dryden GM Ice Dogs 5-4 in a shootout Friday night in Superior International Junior Hockey League play at Ice for Kids Arena.

Despite getting outshot in the opening period, it was a surging Colton Spicer, who put the home side on the board first, as he buried his fifth of the campaign at 11:36 extending a consecutive game point streak to eight straight games dating back to last season.

Heading into the middle session, Fort Frances went up by a pair thanks to Wyatt Cota’s first man advantage effort of the evening.

Joel Zieroth put the GM Ice Dogs on the board 13 minutes into the session, but Cota’s second power play marker with 50 seconds left in the stanza restored the Lakers two-goal margin heading to the final frame.

The Lakers then went up by three 3:54 into the third courtesy of a Matt Vela power play effort.

A resilient Dryden side battled back with a pair of markers from Derek McPhail and Hank Bouchard to pull back within one with just under eight minutes to play.

The Ice Dogs then forced extra time with Troy Williams notching the equalizer with 1:13 left in regulation.

After a scoreless five-minute overtime solved nothing extra shots were required to determine a winner.

Following first round misses by Spicer and Dryden’s Derek McPhail, Carter Chorney’s toe drag and quick snap shot over the pad of Tate Sproxton proved to be the only tally in the shootout.

Devin Tappenden secured the win for Fort Frances, including making a sprawling glove save on Williams on the final attempt of the evening.

The Ice Dogs out shots the Lakers 42-33 overall.
