Lakers’ Meyer, North Stars Grzelewski named co-Pizza Hut players of the week

THUNDER BAY – The Superior International Junior Hockey League announced Monday that forwards Mason Meyer of the Fort Frances Lakers and rookie Zach Grzelewski of the Thunder Bay North Stars have been named co-Pizza Hut players of the week for the period wrapping up Dec. 1.

Coming off garnering the player of the week nod for the time frame ending Nov. 24, Meyer had another impressive run for the Lakers racking up 13 points in a trio of Fort Frances triumphs while Grzelewski was equally as solid amassing eight points in a pair of Thunder Bay victories.

Meyer continued to pile up the points for Fort Frances during the week that was racking up 10 in a home-and-home sweep of Wisconsin and then capped off his efforts with three more at home Saturday against Dryden.

Among his overall performances last week were four goals, including a game-winner, along with nine assists.

The 19-year-old, who hails from International Falls, Minn., is presently on a nine-game point streak while sitting second overall in SIJHL offensive production with 41 points behind teammate Lucas Debenedet’s 47.

As for Grzelweski, the youngest player in the SIJHL, the 16-year-old forward was impressive for this hometown Thunder Bay side beginning his week by firing a league season-high four goals, including the game-winner, in a 4-3 road victory at English River Friday.

He then followed that up with another four-point performance Saturday tallying twice more and dishing out a pair of assists in a 6-3 triumph at home vs. Wisconsin.

On the season Grzelewski is also riding a nine-game point streak for the North Stars.

At the conclusion of the regular season the SIJHL’s most valuable player will be presented the Pizza Hut player of the year award and will also go on to be the league’s representative for the national Canadian Junior Hockey League player of the year trophy.
