Lakers drop Miners 5-2

RED LAKE, Ont. – Mason Meyer tallied twice and set-up another to help lead the Fort Frances Lakers to a 5-2 triumph over the English River Miners Tuesday in a Superior International Junior Hockey League neutral site affair at Cochenour Arena.

It took Fort Frances just1:48 to grab the lead in this one as Meyer beat English River starter Greg Harney with his fifth goal in as many games.

The Miners answered however just over six minutes later to knot the affair at 1-1 before the opening session was complete thanks to Eric Champagne.

The Lakers went back in front 3:45 into the second stanza when Carter Chorney banged home his second of the season past Harney.

Meyer’s second of the evening and sixth overall four minutes later put the Fort up a pair.

Dominic Blouin pulled English River back to within one before the period was compete to make it interesting.

The Lakers put the game away in the final frame however as Bryson Jasper at 2:42 and Wyatt Cota in the late stages closed out the night’s scoring.

Colton Spicer doled out three assists to aid the offensive cause for the winning side.

Ryan Ferguson made 25 stops to pick-up his second straight win for the Lakers.

Harney saw 41 attempts in defeat for the Miners.

SIJHL play resumes Wednesday as the Thunder Bay North Stars have their home opener when they host the Minnesota Iron Rangers in a 7:30 p.m. start at the Fort William Gardens.
