Kercz OT hero as Ice Dogs edge Lakers

DRYDEN, Ont. –  Sporting pink jerseys in their annual Cancer Game, Zachary Kercz of the Dryden GM Ice Dogs scored his second goal of the game 18 seconds into overtime as they edged the Fort Frances Lakers 3-2 Saturday evening in Superior International Junior Hockey League action at Memorial Arena.

After a scoreless opening period, Dryden got on the board first early in the second as Jonathon Philley connected on the power play at 2:38.

The GM Ice Dogs then went up a pair 14:56 into the session as Kercz beat Fort Frances starter Nathan Park.

The Lakers answered that less than a minute later as Roshen Jaswal notched his first SIJHL goal.

In the third, Fort Frances came back to force time late as Wyatt scored the equalizer with 1:26 remaining in regulation.

With both sides playing four skaters aside, Kercz won it early in the OT as Dryden pulled out the victory.

Matt Houston dished out assists on both of Kercz’ tallies for a two-point night.

Tate Sproxton turned in a solid 36-save performance to pick up the win for the Ice Dogs.

Park made 25 stops in defeat in a game where his side did earn a point in the extra time setback.

Dryden returns to the ice Sunday at 7:30 p.m. as they take on the English River Miners back at Memorial Arena.
