Iron Rangers upend Lakers 4-2

FORT FRANCES, Ont. –  The Minnesota Iron Rangers got a pair of goals from Evan Erickson and a 37-save effort from Devin Tappenden to help lift their side to a 4-2 triumph over the Fort Frances Lakers Tuesday night in Superior International Junior Hockey League play at Ice for Kids Arena.

Erickson got the Iron Rangers going with a shorthanded effort six and half minutes into the contest.

Fort Frances defenceman Nick Minerva tied it in the latter stages of the opening period with his 10th of the season at 18:11.

Minnesota picked up two more markers in the middle session off the sticks of Matt O’Dea and then Eric Madison, with just eight seconds left in the frame, to make it 3-1 after 40 minutes.

Dylan Robertson pulled the Lakers to within one at 4:37 of the third, but Erickson iced it with an empty netter in the final moments to round out the scoring.

Fort Frances fired 39 shots on former Lakers netminder Tappenden who picked up the win, which was his seventh of the season for Minnesota and 18th overall.

Nathan Park allowed three against and made 26 stops in defeat for the home side.

Fort Frances returns to the ice Wednesday in one of two SIJHL games on the slate as they travel to Thunder Bay to take on the North Stars at 7:30 p.m.

The league’s other contest features the Dryden GM Ice Dogs paying a visit to Ear Falls Arena to meet the English River Miners at 7 p.m.
