Iron Rangers roll over Miners

HOYT LAKES,  Minn. – The Minnesota Iron Rangers received offensive contributions from 15 different skaters as they rolled to a 10-2 triumph over the English River Miners Friday in a Superior International Junior Hockey League contest at Hoyt Lakes Arena.

The game was scoreless past the midway point of the opening period before Minnesota tacked on tallies from Jason Reynolds and Thomas Fazio to go up by a pair after 20 minutes.

Three more markers in the middle session, off the sticks of Alex Rezansoff, Evan Erickson and Matt O’Dea, put the Iron Rangers in control of the contest before Layne Anderson put the Miners on the board with a power play goal with four and a half minutes to go in the frame.

Drew Millis made it 6-1 Minnesota a couple shifts later as the home side held a comfortable lead heading into the third.

The Miners replaced starter Greg Harney with P.D. Melgoza to begin the final frame, but he was greeted by O’Dea’s second of the night and one by Alex Arnold to increase Iron Rangers’ cushion.

Taylor Bargar added another man advantage effort for English River at 7:34 before Minnesota’s Max Seiter and Jake Ellingson finished off the romp with goals in the latter stages of the match-up.

The Iron Rangers pelted Harney and Melgoza with 61 shots in taking the one-sided decision while Kyle Carignan made 21 saves to pick up the win.

Both sides will meet again Saturday at 7 p.m. back in Hoyt Lakes.

One other SIJHL contest will also be on the slate Saturday as the Fort Frances Lakers host the Thunder Bay North Stars in a 7:30 p.m. start at Ice for Kids Arena.
