Iron Rangers blast North Stars

HOYT LAKES, Minn. – Jake Ellingson and Gus Karkinen both tallied twice to help the Minnesota Iron Rangers roll over the Thunder Bay North Stars 9-1 in a Superior International Junior Hockey League match-up Friday evening at Hoyt Lakes Arena.

Minnesota grabbed a 3-1 lead after one period of play getting goals from Jason Reynolds, Max Seitor and Ellingson while North Stars’ affiliate Johnny Parrot notched the lone Thunder Bay marker on the night.

The Iron Rangers took control from there adding more goals in each of the next two sessions to win going away.

Alex Rezansoff at even strength, Evan Erickson on the power play and Thomas Fazio shorthanded accounted for the offensive efforts in the middle stanza.

After Ellingson made it 6-1 early in the third, Karkinen tacked his his goals to round out the scoring.

Kyle Carignan made 25 saves to record the win for Minnesota.

Nathanial Dupuis started for the North Stars and suffered the loss allowing six against with P.D. Melgoza giving up the final three in just over 24 minutes of work as the dup combined to face 37 shots on the night.

Thunder Bay returns to the ice Saturday in the lone SIJHL game of the evening as they visit Fort Frances in a 7:30 start vs. the Lakers at Ice for Kids Arena.
