Iron Rangers blast Miners

HOYT LAKES, Minn. – The Minnesota Iron Rangers scored three times on the power play and once more while shorthanded as they blasted the English River Miners 8-2 in Superior International Junior Hockey League action Thursday at Hoyt Lakes Arena.

Minnesota came out flying and grabbed a 3-0 lead before the contest was 15 minutes old on even stength efforts from Tristyn Sabina and Alex Mimmack’s first SIJHL goal as well as a man down marker from Nolan Magsamen, which spelled an early end to Miners’ starter Reid Kilburn’s night in favour of Korlan Vader the rest of the way.

English River got one back before the opening frame was complete as Destin Robinson collected his second of the campaign at 16:25.

The Iron Rangers added to their lead grabbing a 5-1 cushion after 40 minutes on tallies by John Cuni along with Keaton Huott’s initial SIJHL marker.

Special teams allowed the home side to put the game away as they connected three times on the power play with Gus Karkinen knocking in a pair and Jake Ellingson the other as Minnesota took total control.

English River got one back with a minute and a half to go from Matt O’Neill to round out the scoring.

Alex Arnold and Austin Ramirez had two assists apiece for the Iron Rangers in the triumph.

Kyle Carignan made 19 saves to pick up the win for Minnesota.

Kilburn allowed three against on 15 shots and suffered the loss for the Miners with Vader stopping 24 of 29 in relief.
