Ice Dogs skate past Miners

DRYDEN, Ont. –  Cole Golka had a pair of goals, including one on a penalty shot, and an assist to help lead the Dryden GM Ice Dogs past the English River Miners 8-3 Wednesday evening in a Superior International Junior Hockey League contest at Memorial Arena.

Dryden jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a power play marker from Eric Masters and an even strength effort from Golka before the contest was 12 minutes old.

English River cut into the deficit courtesy of a Joel Warkington man advantage tally eith 33 seconds left in the opening session.

The GM Ice Dogs came out hard in the middle stanza tacking on four more goals 10 minutes apart to go up 6-1 before the Miners added one in the latter stages of the period.

Blake Berg, on the power play, Masters’ second of the night and Zach Kercz all found the back of the net, which spelled the end of English River starter Greg Harney’s night.

Replacement P.D. Melgoza was beaten quickly in his appearance as Kercz notched another for Dryden at 12:25.

Hank Bouchard picked one up for the Miners four minutes later to make it a 6-2 game through two.

The final frame saw the game’s final three tallies supplied starting with Golka converting on a shorthanded penalty shot attempt at 4:50.

Up a man, English River added one more courtesy of Dominic Blouin 28 seconds later while Dylan Cusmano rounded out the scoring for the home side at 6:51.

Chase Gorman made 28 saves to pick up the win for the GM Ice Dogs.

Harney faced 32 attempts in defeat for the Miners while Melgoza allowed three against on 28 attempts in relief.
