Ice Dogs edge Lakers in a shootout

DRYDEN, Ont. – Tyson Holder had two goals in regulation and one in the shootout, along with an assist, in a high-scoring Superior International Junior Hockey League affair Wednesday evening saw the Dryden Ice Dogs edge the visiting Fort Frances Lakers 7-6 at Memorial Arena.

It was a dream start for the Ice Dogs who tallied twice before the game was five minutes old with Tyson Holder and Derek McPhail just 66 seconds apart spelling an early end to the night of Lakers’ starter Jordan Cartney in favour of Ryan Ferguson.

Fort Frances pulled to within one late in the first thanks to Mason Meyer.

Meyer then struck shorthanded early in the second to tie it only to see Zach Kercz put Dryden back on top just as a penalty had expired.

The offensive outburst continued in the middle stanza with the Lakers tacking on four more tallies to the Ice Dogs two, making it a 6-5 game in favour of the visitors after 40 minutes.

Connecting for Fort Frances was Bryson Jasper, Patrick Sofer, Aaron Wesley-Chisel and Tanner Fricke while Holder and Rory Court countered for Dryden with man advantage efforts.

The Ice Dogs then forced overtime midway through the third as Drew Decker tying the contest at 6-6.

After a scoreless five-minute OT solved nothing, extra shots were required to determine who would get the extra point in the standings.

In the shootout, Holder and Kevin Kurm traded goals on each team’s third shot before Kercz struck again for Dryden on their fourth attempt.

Needing to score to keep the game going Terry Hughes stopped Lucas Debenedet to send the hometown fans away happy.

Hughes made 41 stops in regulation and OT along with three of four in the shootout to pick-up the win.

Ferguson faced 37 shots in a long relief stint.

With the victory the Ice Dogs improve to 3-1 on the season while the Lakers picked up a point in the shootout setback as their record went to 1-1-0-1 overall.
