Houston’s hat trick lifts Ice Dogs over Iron Rangers

DRYDEN, Ont. – Matt Houston scored three times and added an assist as the Dryden GM Ice Dogs topped the visiting Minnesota Iron Rangers 5-3 Friday evening in a Superior International Junior Hockey League contest held at Memorial Arena.

Jonathon Philley opened the scoring for Dryden seven minutes into the contest as he connected during an Ice Dogs power play.

Minnesota’s Thomas Fazio tied it at 18:41 only to see Blake Berg put the home side back on top just 24 seconds later.

After Hunter Routheau pulled the Iron Rangers even in the second, Houston put his club back in front for good with the first of three he would notch in succession for a natural hat trick starting at 14:43 of the middle stanza.

Houston then added two more in the final frame before Minnesota’s Gus Karkinen struck shorthanded with 8:23 remaining to round out the night’s scoring.

Shots on goal favoured Minnesota 36-27 with Tate Sproxton picking up the win and Kyle Carignan the loss.

SIJHL action continues Saturday as the Thunder Bay North Stars host the English River Miners as the Fort William Gardens while the Fort Frances Lakers entertain the Iron Rangers at Ice for Kids Arena in a pair of 7:30 p.m. starts.
