3 for Nigro as North Stars outlast Miners

THUNDER BAY, Ont. – Nicholas Nigro scored three times, including his second consecutive game-winner, as the Thunder Bay North Stars outlasted the English River Miners 6-4 Saturday in a Superior International Junior Hockey League match-up at the Fort William Gardens.

The two sides traded a pair of tallies apiece in the opening 20 minutes with Eric Champagne and Taylor Bargar connecting for Englihs River while Brandon Wolframe and Daniel McKitrick countered for Thunder Bay.

In the middle session Nigro notched his first two of the night, the initial one coming on the power play at 15:10 and the next effort happening with eight seconds remaining in the stanza.

Nigro then finished off a natural hat trick 36 seconds into the third to make it 5-2 Thunder Bay.

Champagne tacked on two more to finish off a three-tally night for him and bring the Miners back to within one, but Ryan McQueen iced it with an empty netter in the final minute to secure the victory for the North Stars.

Shots on goal in the contest were 33 apiece with Nathaniel Dupuis picking up the win and P.D. Melgoza the loss.
