Golka sets franchise record in Dryden win

DRYDEN, Ont. –  Cole Golka’s franchise record-setting 43rd goal of the season proved to be the game-winner as the Dryden GM Ice Dogs edged the Minnesota Iron Rangers 2-1 Tuesday evening in a Superior International Junior Hockey League match-up at Memorial Arena.

Golka’s effort, coming at 15:21 of the second period, established a new Dryden mark for most goals in a single campaign, surpassing the 42 Jordan Chong notched for the club back during 2005-06.

With 43 tallies, the SIJHL’s leading point producer this season with 81 is also now tied for 10th all-time in league history for markers in one year.

The GM Ice Dogs got off to a quick start as Matt Houston scored 47 seconds into the contest beating Minnesota starter Devin Tappenden.

It stayed that was until Golka’s eventual game-winner in the middle stanza.

Minnesota got on the board with 2:02 to go in the second courtesy of an A.J. Rupert effort in what turned out to be the final goal of the evening.

Tate Sproxton turned aside 38 of 39 shots to record the win for Dryden while Tappenden made 34 saves in defeat for the Iron Rangers.

Tappenden also thwarted Dryden’s Derek McPhail on a second period penalty shot attempt.
