Fort Frances defeats English River 5-2

FORT FRANCES, Ont. –  Wyatt Cota had a goal and two assists to help lead the Fort Frances Lakers to a 5-2 victory  over the English River Miners Tuesday in a Superior International Junior Hockey League contest at Ice for Kids Arena.

The Lakers opened the scoring midway through the first period as SIJHL Amyotte’s rookie of the month for February, Dylan Kooner, continued his impressive play by notching his eighth goal of the season while also extending a consecutive game point streak to seven straight contests.

Hank Bouchard’s fifth of the campaign tied it for the Miners at 12:03 as his effort eluded Fort Frances starter Pierce Dushenko.

Matt Vela put the home side back up by one before the stanza was complete as he found the mark at 17:09.

Fort Frances made a goaltending change to begin the second with Nathan Park taking over for Dushenko to begin the frame.

The lone goal of the period was supplied by the Lakers as Dylan Robertson connected at 6:58.

A Bryson Jasper power play tally made it 4-1 Fort Frances just past the three-minute mark of the third.

Layne Anderson brought English River closer with 7:16 to go, but Cota added one during a man advantage in the latter stages of the contest to round out the scoring.

Park made 12 saves in two periods of relief to record the win with Dushenko stopping 10 of 11 in this first.

P.D. Melgoza faced 42 shots in a losing cause for the Miners.

SIJHL action continues Wednesday as the Thunder Bay North Stars welcome the Minnesota Iron Rangers to the Fort William Gardens in a game that features a 7:30 p.m. start.
