Fort Frances wins 9th straight

THUNDER BAY, Ont. – The Fort Frances Lakers got a goal and two assists from defenceman Nick Minerva to help them win their ninth consecutive Superior International Junior Hockey League contest, a 4-2 decision over the Minnesota Iron Rangers Saturday night at Hoyt Lakes Arena.

Fort Frances got going offensively with a Robbie Bonthron power play marker six and a half minutes into the game.

Minnesota tied it six minutes later as Nolan Magsamen collected a man advantage effort of his own to level the proceedings at 1-1.

The Lakers retook the lead once again at 15:09 of the first as Jack Bernie supplied his seventh of the season.

A late power play tally in the second put the visitors up by a pair after 40 minutes as Dylan Kooner scored for a 10th time overall.

The Iron Rangers got one back midway through the third, while up a man courtesy of Zack Taylor, to make it a one-goal game once again.

Minnesota pulled starter Bryce Kamenick late in favour of an extra attacker in an attempt to notch the equalizer, but the Lakers’ Minerva iced it win an empty netter with 45 seconds left to round things out offensively.

Carter Chorney also had two assists for Fort Frances.

Pierce Dushenko made 30 saves and won his ninth straight start in net to extend his and the Lakers winning streak as they improved to a SIJHL-best 16-2-0-0.

Kamenick saw 24 attempts fired his way in defeat for the Iron Rangers who fell to 7-10-2-0 on the season.
