English River strikes late to defeat Dryden

DRYDEN, Ont. – Alex Maticic’s game-winning goal with 43 seconds remaining in regulation lifted the English River Miners to a 6-5 victory over the Dryden GM Ice Dogs in a Superior International Junior Hockey League match-up Saturday evening at Memorial Arena.

It was a tally-filled opening period with with the Miners jumping out to a 3-0 lead midway through the stanza on power play markers by Lucas Toth, Mark Dryer and Dominic Blouin.

It was all Ice Dogs in the final half of the first as they added three of their own including a pair via the man advantage from Jonathon Philley and Nick Prouty along with an even strength effort courtesy of Matt Houston.

Houston’s second of the night nine seconds into the middle session gave Dryden the lead before Maticic’s first of the evening levelled the proceedings at 6:46.

Special teams allowed Dryden to take a 5-4 lead after 40 minutes after Philley added another on the power play at 17:38.

English River battled back to tie it five minutes into the third Jarrett Day and then with overtime looming, Maticic fired home his second game-winner in as many nights to cap off a four-point weekend for himself and the Miners after they won in Thunder Bay Friday.

Blouin, Hank Bouchard and Landen Matechuk each dished out two assists each for English River as did Cole Golka for Dryden.

P.D. Melgoza faced 39 shots and picked up the win for the visitors.

Tate Sproxton made 26 stops in defeat for the Ice Dogs.
