English River dumps Dryden 8-3

DRYDEN – The English River Miners broke open a close game with four unanswered goals in the third period to defeat the Dryden Ice Dogs 8-3 Thursday evening in Superior International Junior Hockey League action at Memorial Arena.

After Brendan Wilde gave the visitors the early lead, Zach Kercz tied things up for Dryden before the opening period was complete.

English River then struck for three quick power play tallies in the middle session to go up 4-1 on markers by Paul Lamoureux, Taylor Bargar and Wilde’s second of the evening.

A pair of man advantage markers by Chris Varrin pulled the Ice Dogs to within one to give the Miners a narrow lead heading into the final frame.

English River put the game away in that final frame as Kellen MacBlain, Nathan Johnson, Ryley Pace and Bargar once again all found the back of the net.

In all seven different skaters had multiple-point nights for the winners as the first-year club continues to make their presence felt in the league.

Greg Harney made 28 saves to record the win in net for the Miners while Joakim Jutras faced 36 shots in a losing cause for Dryden.

With the victory English River improved to 17-22-3-0 while the Ice Dogs fell to 18-23-5-0.

SIJHL play continues Friday with Wisconsin at home to Minnesota at 7 p.m. and Thunder Bay hosts Fort Frances at 7:30 p.m.
