Dryden wins 3rd straight

DRYDEN, Ont. – Cole Golka scored twice in regulation and supplied the only tally in the shootout as the Dryden GM Ice Dogs won their third straight as they held off a late Thunder Bay North Stars rally to win 5-4 in Superior International Junior Hockey League action at Memorial Arena.

Special teams accounted for all three tallies in the opening period as Kris Kellaway connected on the power play for Thunder Bay at 7:16 before Nick Eytcheson countered with the man advantage for Dryden just over a minute later.

Golka put the GM Ice Dogs up one with another extra man effort at 12:11 to give the home side the edge entering the second.

Golka’s second of the night midway through the frame accounted for the lone goal of the session making it 3-1.

The North Stars got back in it 22 seconds into the third as Kellaway buried another on the evening.

Dryden restored their two-goal lead seven minutes into the stanza courtesy of Matt Houston.

Battling back the North Stars drew within one as Daniel McKitrick beat Dryden’s Tate Sproxton at 11:09 and Brandon Wolframe forced extra time with 1:49 left in regulation to give each side a point.

After a scoreless five-minute OT Golka won it in the shootout as he was the only player to convert in extra shots to extend the GM Ice Dogs winning streak.

Shots on goal favoured Dryden 42-36 with Sproxton picking up the win and P.D. Melgoza suffering the shootout setback.
