Dryden takes series opener vs. Minnesota

HOYT LAKES, Minn. –  The Dryden GM Ice Dogs rode the strength of four unanswered goals to defeat the Minnesota Iron Rangers 4-1 Friday evening in Game 1 of their Superior International Junior Hockey League semifinal series at Hoyt Lakes Arena.

Game 2 in this best-of-seven affair goes Saturday back in Hoyt Lakes at 7 p.m.

After a scorless opening period, it was Minnesota that got on the board first at 5:48 of the second as Hunter Routheau beat Dryden starter Tate Sproxton.

The visitors drew level in the latter stages of the middle stanza as SIJHL Amyotte’s Awards & Promotions most valuable player Cole Golka connected on the power play at 17:14.

A minute and a half later the GM Ice Dogs went in front for good take to Dylan Cusmano who notched the eventual game-winner as his shot eluded Devin Tappenden in the Iron Rangers net.

Dryden got another man advantage marker off the stick of Jonathon Philley six minutes into the final frame then iced it with a shorthanded effort courtesy of Blake Berg to round out the scoring at 12:32.

Berg also had two assists on the evening for a three-point night.

Shots on goal favoured Dryden 40-34 with Sproxtin picking up the victory and Tappenden the loss.
