Brakebill buries game-winner early in OT as Lumberjacks rally past Lakers

SPOONER, Wis. – Parker Brakebill picked the opportune time to notch his first goal of the new year as his tally 15 seconds into overtime finished off a 3-2 come from behind victory for the Wisconsin Lumberjacks over the visiting Fort Frances Lakers in a Superior International Junior Hockey League contest Wednesday at the Spooner Civic Center.

Fort Frances came out quickly, netting the night’s first goal 11 seconds in off the stick of Kyle Uzelman.

The Lakers then went up by a pair late in the period as Stone Stelzl supplied his 13th of the season.

Wisconsin cut into the deficit early in the middle stanza as some nice puck movement resulted in Joel Matthews slamming in his seventh as he put the home side on the board.

The Lumberjacks then forced extra time just past the 12-minute mark of the third when Ryley Cardinal finished off the work of teammates Tyler Shetland and Dalton Garcia.

Heading to OT, Wisconsin converted quickly as Matthews intercepted a clearing attempt then made a perfect cross-ice pass over to Brakebill on the left side, who promptly fired the winner past a sprawled Alex Bugeja in the Fort Frances net to end it.

Shots on goal favoured the Lumberjacks 37-17 with Nathan Mueller picking up the win while Bugeja suffered the setback, in which his side did earn a point in defeat.
