Alcock strikes late to lift Lakers over GM Ice Dogs

FORT FRANCES, Ont. – Bowen Alcock’s goal with 12 seconds remaining helped the Fort Frances Lakers rally to edge the Dryden GM Ice Dogs 5-4 Tuesday evening in Superior International Junior Hockey League play at Ice for Kids Arena.

The visiting Ice Dogs got on the board first as Cole Golka notched his league-leading 12th tally of the campaign at 2:31.

Special teams allowed the Lakers the pull even just over six minutes later as Miles Nolan connected on the power play.

Dryden came out in the second and went up 3-1 by the midway mark of the contest on markers by Jonathon Philley and Joel Zieroth, which spelled an early end to Fort Frances starter Devin Tappenden’s night as he was replaced by Ryan Ferguson.

The goaltending change spurred the Lakers on as tallies by Mason Meyer and Wyatt Cota tied things up at 3-3 after 40 minutes.

In the final frame Dryden went back on top 4-3 at 5:55 courtesy of a power play effort from Josh Brunton, which was his first goal in the SIJHL.

Answering back, Fort Frances struck on the power play with 4:18 to go to level the proceedings once again.

Then with overtime looming the Lakers’ Carter Chorney worked the puck free in the corner and fed Alcock who fired home the winner past Ice Dogs netminder Tate Spronxton late to complete the comeback.

Shots on goal favoured Fort Frances 37-28 with Ferguson picking up the win in relief and while Sproxton suffered the loss.

Next up on the SIJHL slate has the Thunder Bay North Stars hosting the Minnesota Iron Rangers Wednesday evening in a 7:30 p.m. start at the Fort William Gardens.
