4-goal 1st and shutout goaltending by Novak lead Norskies over Iron Rangers

HOYT LAKES, Minn. – The Thief River Falls Norskies scored four times in the first period while Sam Novak stopped all 17 shots he faced for his first Superior International Junior Hockey League shutout in a 6-0 win over the Minnesota Iron Rangers Friday at Hoyt Lakes Arena.

Thief River Falls took early control of the contest getting the night’s opening tally just 39 seconds in on a Michael Johnson marker.

The Norskies added two more 21 seconds apart later in the frame on quick efforts from Parker Simonson and Tommy Stang.

Keaton Huot added one more for the visitors at 17:54 to put them up by four after one.

Minnesota replaced starter Sean Angle in favour of Jackson Nelson to begin the second, but he was greeted with Connor Schuster’s fourth at 1:48.

Huot then added his second of the evening and 17th overall at 5:55 of the third to round out the scoring.

Johnson added three assists to go along with his goal while Huot and Simonson chipped in with two helpers apiece.

While Novak picked up the win, Angle suffered the loss allowing four against on 12 shots while Nelson stopped 18 of 20 in relief.
