Special teams sends Fort Frances past Thunder Bay

FORT FRANCES, Ont. – The Fort Frances Lakers scored three times while shorthanded and once more via the power play to help them thump the Thunder Bay North Stars 8-2 Saturday evening in Superior International Junior Hockey League play at Ice for Kids Arena.

Carter Chorney opened the scoring for the Lakers 11 minutes into the contest, only to see the North Stars tie it at 13:29 on a power play marker by Kenny Turner.

Then with Fort Frances down a man, they tallied twice 65 seconds apart on markers by Brandon Zajicek and Isaiah Olschewske.

Aaron Wesley-Chisel converted on a late power play to get the visitors closer after one period of play.

However, it was all Lakers after that as they got their third man-down marker of the night at 9:44 of the second to go up 4-2 thanks to Dylan Kooner.

Jack Bernie then extended the home side’s cushion with 10 seconds left in the middle session.

It was more Lakers in the third as they rounded out the romp with efforts supplied by Christian Ripley, Andrew Willner and Ryan Gazich.

Chorney also had three assists to go along with his goal in the win while Zajicek, Kooner and Nick Minerva dished out two helpers apiece.

Pierce Dushenko made 22 stops for Fort Frances, who extended their winning streak to seven in the process.

Corbin suffered the loss for Thunder Bay as he faced 38 shots in defeat.

Eric Mann also saw 3:41 of action for the North Stars late in the first period stopping all four attempts he saw.
