North Stars nix Lakers lengthy winning streak

THUNDER BAY, Ont. – A Brad Arabia goal 6:41 into the third period proved to be the game-winner as the Thunder Bay North Stars upended the visiting Fort Frances Lakers 4-2 Wednesday evening in a Superior International Junior Hockey League match-up at the Fort William Gardens.

The win by Thunder Bay snapped an eight-game winning streak for league-leading Fort Frances, who had not lost since back on Nov. 28 when they were blanked 3-0 by the same North Stars.

It was a good start for the home side as they grabbed a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes on an early tally by Brad Thrower and one while up a man by Avery Siau at 11:46 as they both collected their ninth goals of the season.

After a scorless middle session, Fort Frances got on the board early in the third courtesy of a Andrew Willner power play marker.

Arabia put the North Stars back up by two with the eventual difference maker while Kris Hamlin added some insurance with a man advantage effort with 2:11 to go.

The Lakers did get one back with 15 seconds remaining as Roshen Jaswal added his club’s second power play goal to round out the scoring.

Thunder Bay defenceman Joe Newhouse had a assist on the night to help him extend a consecutive game point streak to 11 games.

Nick Minerva of Fort Frances had a five-game goal streak come to an end in the loss, but he did pick up a helper to give him points in nine straight outings.

The North Stars held the edge in shots in the contest by a 47-31 margin with Riley Corbin picking up the win that included him thwarting Dylan Robertson on a second period penalty shot while Pierce Dushenko suffered the defeat.
