Miners rally late before topping North Stars in shootout

EAR FALLS, Ont. – The English River Miners rallied for a late shorthanded goal with a second to go in regulation then won it in a shootout as they slipped past the Thunder Bay North Stars 4-3 Friday in Superior International Junior Hockey League action at Ear Falls Arena.

The visiting North Stars came out quickly grabbing a 2-0 lead after one period of play on power play markers by Joe Newhouse and Jared Fanti.

The Miners got one back four minutes into the second stanza as Konnar Dechaine picked up his 15th of the season.

English River tied it 1:46 into the third thanks to Daniel Szpakowski only to see the North Stars go back in front at 7:25 courtesy of Brad Arabia.

Then with time winding down and his side having a player in the penalty box, the Miners’ Brandon Schaber forced extra time in dramatic fashion with a shorthanded effort at 19:59.

After a scoreless five-minute OT, Szpakowski compled the comeback for the home side by notching the lone tally in the shootout to give English River the win.

The Miners outshoot Thunder Bay 38-35 on the night with Ried Kilburn picking up the win while Eric Mann suffered the setback in which the Miners secured the second point.
