Maticic’s 2 helps lift Miners past Iron Rangers

EAR FALLS, Ont. – Alex Maticic had a pair of goals to help the English River Miners defeat the Minnesota Iron Rangers 4-2 Saturday evening in a Superior International Junior Hockey League match-up at Ear Falls Arena.

English River got off to a good start grabbing a 2-0 lead before the contest was five minutes old on markers by Ryker Moreau and Maticic.

Minnesota got one those back at 8:24 on Tyler Lindstrom’s third of the season, but the Miners answered that with a Destin Robinson man advantage effort at 14:33.

Maticic’s 13th of the campaign made it 4-2 in the middle frame as that score held up through two periods of play.

A Gus Karkinen tally 6:38 brought the Iron Rangers closer, but it turned out to be the final goal of the night.

Daniel Szpakowski dished out two assists to bolster the English River offensive numbers.

Reid Kilburn played all by a stretch of seven minutes and 49 seconds in the second period and finished with 39 stops allowing the two against with Korlan Vader handling all four attempts he saw in relief.

Bryce Kamenick faced 28 shots in defeat for Minnesota.

SIJHL play resumes Sunday evening in Thunder Bay as the Iron Rangers travel to take on the North Stars in a 7:30 p.m. start at the Fort William Gardens.
