Lakers double-up Miners in penalty-filled affair

FORT FRANCES, Ont. – The Superior International Junior Hockey League’s leading point producer in Dylan Robertson, dished out five assists to help the Fort Frances Lakers double up the English River Miners 6-3 Saturday in a penalty-filled contest at Ice for Kids Arena.

After Christian Ripley staked the Lakers to the lead 11 and a half minutes into the game, English River countered with shorthanded effort from Ryker Moreau to to knot the affair at 1-1 at 17:01.

Konnar Dechaine’s team-leading 23rd goal of the season put the Miners in front 22 seconds into the middle stanza only to see Fort Frances strike four times, including three times on the power play, in a 12-minute span to take a 5-2 lead after two periods of play.

Dustin Deugau tied via the man advantage at 5:29 while Ripley’s second of the evening 80 seconds later put the home side up 3-2 with another power play goal.

Nick Minerva’s 21st and Jack Bernie, while up a man, accounted for the other markers for Fort Frances in the frame.

Riley Wagner’s first SIJHL goal on a tip-in at 19:24 of the third came while the Miners were on a man advantage made it 5-3 before Tanner Garnham’s initial league marker 13 seconds later rounded out the scoring.

Minerva also had three assists for the Lakers to give him four points on the night.

Pierce Dushenko faced 42 shots to record the win for Fort Frances while Reid Kilburn saw 41 attempts fired his way in defeat for English River.

The same two teams will tangle again Sunday afternoon at Ice for Kids Arena as they wrap-up their respective regular seasons at 1:30 p.m.
