EAR FALLS, Ont. – Hunter Routheau had the lone goal of the shootout as the Minnesota Iron Rangers pulled out a 5-4 victory over the English River Miners Friday in the opener of the Superior International Junior Hockey League’s 15th season at Ear Falls Arena.

It was a great start for the hometown Miners as they jumped out to a 3-1 lead after one period of play getting two tallies from Landen Matechuk and a single courtesy of Matt O’Neill while Jackson Bond notched his first SIJHL goal for Minnesota.

The Iron Rangers pulled closer with the lone effort in the middle stanza thanks to Josh Gouin at 11:10.

Minnesota then pulled level 4:08 into the third thanks to Routheau.

Brandan Schaber gave the Miners the lead at 10:08 of the third only to see the Iron Rangers counter 26 seconds later with an unassisted effort off the stick of Tristyn Sabina to force overtime.

After a scoreless five-minute OT session, extra shots were required to determine the extra point on the night.

It was there that Routheau completed the comeback for Minnesota as they skated away with two points.

Shots on goal were 34-33 in favour of the Iron Rangers with Kyle Carignan picking up the win and Reid Kilburn the setback in which English River did pick up a point.
