Wilderness to meet the Brooks Bandits in semifinals at Royal Bank Cup
SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. – The Minnesota Wilderness (SIJHL) now know who their semifinal opponent will be at the Royal Bank Cup Canadian national junior A championship in Summerside, P.E.I.
With a 1-3 record the Wilderness ended up in fourth spot and will meet the Alberta Junior Hockey League champion Brooks Bandits in a contest that goes at 2 p.m. AT Saturday.
Brooks (3-1) clinched top spot in round robin play after defeating the previously unbeaten Surrey Eagles (BCHL) 5-2 Thursday afternoon.
The Bandits, who were ranked No. 1 overall for most of the season in the Canadian Junior Hockey League, broke open a 2-2 tie past the midway mark of the third period to defeat the Wilderness 6-3 in their initial meeting at the five-team event topping Minnesota, who were tabbed No. 2 in the CJHL the final 13 weeks of the regular season.
Surrey (3-1) finished second overall will take on the 2-2 Summerside Western Capitals, who placed third, in Saturday’s other semifinal match-up at 6p.m. AT.
The two winners will then square off for the Royal Bank Cup Sunday at 7 p.m. AT in the championship game, which will be broadcast on TSN.
The Truro Bearcats (1-3) finished fifth overall, but did salvage a victory in their season finale after topping Summerside 4-2 to conclude their campaign on a winning note.
