Thunder Bay edges Dryden for 2nd straight night

THUNDER BAY, Ont. – Nicholas Nigro tallied twice and added an assist to help lift the Thunder Bay North Stars to a narrow 5-4 victory over the Dryden GM Ice Dogs Saturday evening in Superior International Junior Hockey League action at the Fort William Gardens.

Matthias Gardiman put the home side up early only to see Dryden counter with a shorthanded effort by Matt Houston and an even strength effort from Cole Golka to go up 2-1.

Nigro then notched a pair of power play markers before the session was complete to make it 3-2 Thunder Bay after 20 minutes.

The two long-time rivals traded goals in the middle stanza with Kris Kellaway scoring for the North Stars and Joel Zieroth countering for the Ice Dogs.

Ryan Walsh put Thunder Bay up by two, via the man advantage, midway through the final frame before Dryden’s Royce Rossignol added one on the power play with 8:36 to go on what was the final tally of the night.

The North Stars out shot their opponents 35-25 on the night with Eric Mann picking up the win and Josh Martin the loss.
