Strong 3rd lifts Iron Rangers over Miners

HOYT LAKES, Minn. –  The Minnesota Iron Rangers stormed back from a one goal deficit in the third period to pull out a 4-1 victory over the English River Miners Friday in a Superior International Junior Hockey League contest at Hoyt Lakes Arena.

After a scoreless first period, English River got the only marker in the middle stanza off the stick of Jarrett Day at 7:31 as he notched his fourth in a Miners’ uniform.

Minnesota drew level five minutes into the third as Matt O’Dea finished off the work of Hunter Routheau and Thomas Fazio.

Routheau then fired home the eventual game-winner past English River netminder Greg Harney at 8:19.

Jason Reynolds then added some insurance four minutes later and iced it with an empty netter in the final seconds to round out the scoring.

Devin Tappenden made 22 stops to pick up the win for the Iron Rangers while Harney was solid making 40 stops in defeat for the Miners.

SIJHL action resumes Saturday on two fronts as the Thunder Bay North Stars entertains English River in a 7:30 p.m. start at the Fort William Gardens while the league-leading Fort Frances Lakers travel to take on the Dryden GM Ice Dogs at 8 p.m. at Memorial Arena.
