Shortreed shines in Lakers victory

CLOQUET, Minn. – Jameson Shortreed kicked out 40 of 43 shots he faced to help lead the Fort Frances Lakers to a 4-3 victory over the Minnesota Wilderness Wednesday evening in Superior International Junior Hockey League action at Northwoods Credit Union Arena in Cloquet.

Jeremy Johnson staked the home side to the lead with the lone goal of the opening period.

A pair of quick strikes within the first minute of the second stanza sent Fort Frances out in front with Colton Spicer and Jacob Nolan scoring to make it 2-1 Lakers.

A Kevin Kurm power play effort at 13:46 of the middle fame extended the Fort Frances lead only to see Johnson notch his second of the night with a man advantage marker in the late stages to make it 3-2 Lakers after 40 minutes.

Mason Meyer then scored the eventual game-winner midway through the third before Conrad Sampair rounded out the scoring for the Wilderness.

The Lakers improved to 7-4-0-1 with the triumph while first place Minnesota slipped to 12-3 overall.

Gordy Defiel faced 27 shots in a losing cause for the Wilderness.
