Lakers’ Mason Meyer named Pizza Hut player of the week
THUNDER BAY, Ont. – The Superior International Junior Hockey League announced Monday that Mason Meyer of the Fort Frances Lakers has been named Pizza Hut player of the week for the period running Feb. 10-16.
In three games during the week that was the Lakers forward amassed eight points in helping league-leading Fort Frances skate to a trio of victories.
Starting off this past Wednesday vs. the Dryden Ice Dogs, the 19-year-old native of International Falls, Minn., scored once and doled out a pair of assists in a 6-2 road win.
Two nights later Meyer had a natural hat-trick, which included the game-winner and set-up another in another 6-2 triumph, this time over the Minnesota Iron Rangers at Ice for Kids Arena.
He then followed up his award-winning effort by adding another helper in a 3-2 decision over Minnesota as the Lakers completed a sweep of a home-and-home with the Iron Rangers in Hoyt Lakes.
On the season Meyer sits third overall in the SIJHL in offensive production with 84 points. His 36 tallies tie him for the second most in the league and he is third in assists with 48. He also shares top spot in the SIJHL in power play markers with 13.
Also earning consideration for Pizza Hut player of the week was Taylor Santorelli, (F) Thunder Bay North Stars; Zann Anderson, (G) Wisconsin Wilderness; Derek McPhail, (F) Dryden Ice Dogs; Evan Erickson, (F), Minnesota Iron Rangers and Dominic Blouin, (F) English River Miners.
At the conclusion of the regular season the SIJHL’s most valuable player will be presented the Pizza Hut player of the year award and will also go on to be the league’s representative for the national Canadian Junior Hockey League player of the year trophy.
