Lakers edge Iron Rangers 4-3 in shootout

HOYT LAKES, Minn. – A Tanner Fricke goal in the shootout proved to be the difference as the Fort Frances Lakers edged the Minnesota Iron Rangers 4-3, in a shootout, Wednesday night in Superior International Junior Hockey League action at Hoyt Lakes Arena.

Minnesota grabbed a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes when Eric Madison connected at the 18:02 mark of the opening session.

Lyndon Lipinski tied it on the power play early in the first minute of the middle session only to see A.J. Rupert put the home side back on top at 2:28.

Lipinksi’s second of the night a couple minutes later levelled the proceedings once again, but the Iron Rangers retook the lead for a third time midway through the stanza courtesy of an Evan Erickson man advantage marker.

Fort Frances would force overtime with 9:43 to go however as Lucas Debenedet notched his league-leading 31st tally of the season.

After a scoreless five-minute OT, extra shots were required to determine which team would pick-up the extra point in the standings.

After a Debenedet miss Austin Frank made it look easy with Minnesota’s first chance.

Bryson Jasper then deked to his left and went high on Alex Reichle to tie it for Fort Frances while Jordan Cartney stymied Matt Audet on his opportunity for Minnesota.

Fricke then deked and tucked it past Reichle to put the Lakers ahead setting the stage for Cartney to deny Jason Reynolds and give the visitors the two points putting an end to a season-high two-game losing drought.

Shots on goal favoured the Lakers 30-24 on the night.
