Iron Rangers even series with Ice Dogs

HOYT LAKES, Minn. – An early shorthanded goal helped the Minnesota Iron Rangers skate to a 4-1 victory over the Dryden GM Ice Dogs Saturday in a penalty-filled Game 2 of their Superior International Junior Hockey League semifinal series at Hoyt Lakes Arena.

With the result this best-of-seven set is now tied at 1-1 heading into Game 3 Monday at Dryden Memorial Arena.

Down a man early, it was the Iron Rangers who struck first while shorthanded as Matt O’Dea connected at 1:43 for lone tally of the period.

Minnesota took control of the contest early in the middle stanza as they scored three times to go up by four after 40 minutes.

Seth Chumley made 2-0 at 2:06, which was followed by Jake Ellingson notched his first of postseason two and a half minutes later.

Evan Erickson then added to the Iron Rangers cushion as be beat Dryden netminder Tate Sproxton during a man advantage opportunity at 6:30.

The Ice Dogs dashed Devin Tappenden’s shutout bid as Nick Eytcheson finished off a feed from Cole Golka for the final goal of the evening.

Shots on goal favoured Minnesota 40-34 with Tappenden picking up the win and Sproxton the loss.
