Iron Rangers edge Lakers in preseason play

HOYT LAKES, Minn. – A Jonathon Losurdo goal 14:25 into the second period stood up to be the game-winner as the Minnesota Iron Rangers held on to edge the Fort Frances Lakers 4-3 Wednesday evening in Superior International Junior Hockey League exhibition action at Hoyt Lakes Arena.

The two sides exchanged tallies in the opening frame with Tyler Tuneberg connecting for Minnesota and Lyndon Lipinski for Fort Frances.

It was all Iron Rangers in the middle session as they struck for three goals of the sticks of Tyler Broderson, Trevor Hoth and Losurdo to go up 4-1 after minutes.

The Lakers battled back in the third with efforts from Lucas Debenedet and Billy Grillo in the late going to pull within one, but that’s as close as they would get as time expired.

Alex Reichle faced 29 shots to pick up the win for Minnesota while Ryan Ferguson made 19 stops in a losing cause for Fort Frances.

The Lakers preseason schedule continues Thursday as the travel to Marathon, Ont., to take on the Thunder Bay North Stars in a game that will serve as a tribute and memorial contest for four Pic River First Nation resident tragically killed in a motor vehicle accident last fall, including former Fort Frances forward Jaret Leclair, who had spent the previous three seasons with the club.

Game time is 8 p.m. at Marathon Arena with all proceeds from the game to the memorial fund in memory of the four.
